Please note that my blog articles are related to the German red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris). As there are many different species in other countries, the information I share here might not apply to all of them.

Ice free squirrel watering hole

7. Dec 2018

Soon it should be cold again, so here is again the tip with the ice-free water trough

Take a planting stone or clay pot and put a grave light in it. Then put a clay bowl with water on it.

The lower picture is only for illustration, put the clay bowl without gap on the planting stone, it comes enough oxygen to the candle.

The clay pot on the right picture we used in the first winter, there we put small wood under it, so that oxygen comes to the candle.

Works great and the water is warm and hot for everyone.

With us, the birds and squirrels are thrilled

By the way, we use this only in permafrost. If it is over 0 degrees during the day, the water thaws by itself again. That is why we have not used too many candles even in the last quite mild winters.

By the way, there are also grave lights with 8 days burning time and also some made of glass.

Who has a power connection outside, can alternatively also use heating plates, as they are offered for chicken drinkers.

If the watering place is to be at ground level, you can also dig the grave candle into the earth a bit and lay paving stones around it and then place the clay bowl on top.

Have fun with the reconstruction!

Myth grey squirrels – there are no grey squirrels in Germany

Many think, and I felt the same way, that only the red squirrels are the European squirrels. And the brown ones, for example, belong to the North American gray squirrel breed. But this is not true at all! In Germany there are no gray squirrels so far. All squirrels...
